1. In a bowl, mix warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
2. In a large bowl, mix flour and salt. Add in the yeast mixture, egg, and butter. Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic (you can use a stand mixer or hands). Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and let it rise for 1–1.5 hours until doubled in size.
3. Roll the dough to about ½-inch thickness. Use a donut cutter (or a glass and bottle cap) to cut out donuts and holes. Place on parchment paper and cover loosely. Let them rest for 30–40 minutes.
4. Heat oil to 180°C (350°F). Fry 2–3 donuts at a time until golden brown (about 1 minute per side). Drain on paper towels.
5. While warm, dip in sugar, glaze, or coat with cinnamon sugar.
